"Death of Preston Bennett, M.P.P.

Intelligence was received yesterday of the death at Kamloops of Mr. Preston Bennett, the recently re-elected M.P.P. for Yale district at the early age of 41. His demise was not altogether unexpected after the information that he was taken with a severe attack of hemorrhage of the lungs a few days ago just after having been declared one of the members elect. From this attack he did not rally but quietly passed away, in spite of every effort to revive him, at the residence of Mr. John Tait on Wednesday. Deceased was born in London, England, educated in France, where he obtained an excellent, classical and commercial education. He was also remarkably well read in English and French literature. His father is in high standing, as a member of the London Stock Exchange, and deceased himself belonged to it previous to coming to British Columbia in 1862. Shortly after his arrival he went to Cariboo; but like many others did not achieve success in the mines. In 1863 he was clerk of the Victoria Police Court and in 1864 took charge of the H.B. Co's establishment in Kamloops and afterwards in company with his partner Mr. Lumby, and his brother Frederick took up land in Spellamacheen, to which additions were made by purchase subsequently and their farm is now the largest and probably the best in British Columbia. This season they have more than 300 acres of magnificent wheat ready for the reaper. The connections of the Right Honourable John Bright have been for many years on terms of intimacy with Mr. Bennett's family; and it will be remembered that a few years ago the widow of a brother of Mr. Bright, came out on a visit to the lamented member for Yale whose untimely death is now regretted throughout the length and breadth of the province. By his consistent course in the late house of assembly he won himself a high place in the estimation of both political friends and opponents. In private life those who knew him best loved and respected him most. British Columbia can ill afford to lose a man of such high culture, genial disposition, strict integrity, and thorough business habits as the late Preston Bennett."

"In Memoriam

At a meeting convened at Kamloops on he 13th August, 1882, for the purpose of bearing testimony to the deep regret felt at the sudden and enexpected death of the late Preston Bennett, Esq., M.P.P., and expressing sympathy with his relations in British Columbia and elsewhere, F.J. Barnard, Esq., M.P., being called to the chair, the following resolutions were passed unanimously.

Moved by J.A. Mara, Esq., M.P.P., seconded by F.G. Vernon, Esq., M.P.P.

Be it resolved, That we, a portion of the constituents so faithfully and ably represented by, and for a long series of years the personal friends and acquaintances of, the highly respected and now much lamented Preston Bennett, Esq., M.P.P., take this opportunity of placing on record our high appreciation of him as a gentleman and unfeigned regret at his removal from our midst by the ruthless hand of death. His many sterling qualities and natural amiability endeared him to all with whom he came in contact. He was emphatically the friend of all and the enemy of none. His rare intelligence and large experience in this country fitted him in a peculiar manner for the position he so honourably and so successfully occupied for the last four years, and to which he was re-elected by a large majority only a few days previous to his death, evincing the confidence reposed in him and the general esteem in which he was held. We tender our heartfelt sympathy to his sorrowing brother in this country, to his relations in England, and also to his life-long friend and companion, Mr. Lumby. We pray that a merciful Providence may lighten the shock to each and all of them and that this expression of our admiration for their departed friend may be a source of comfort in their bereavement and sorrow.

Resolved, That a copy of the above resolutions be sent to the relations of Mr. Bennett in England.

James McIntosh
Secretary of Meeting."

5Letter - H.P.P. Crease to Charles Bennett, 25 Feb 1883.
"Supreme Court Pentrelaw ?
British Columbia Victoria, B.C.
25 Febr 1883

Dear Sir
I did not know your address or I would have anticipated your In Memoriam Card on poor Preston's death.
He was always an honoured guest at my house on account of his excellent qualities of heart and head and was universally esteemed on account of his general affability, a very fair share of natural talent & acquirements which helped him to make his way in the House here - so that he will be not only long be remembered for his personal good qualities but also for that vigorous and successful assertion of his Constituent's rights as earned for him at once the soubriquet of "Bunchgrass Bennett" and his end was in keeping with his life and I am not surprised to hear that his last words should have borne witness to the completeness of a triumphant faith.
Nature asserts her claim, or I would be tempted to say happy is the father who lives to see a son who has lived & so died & now awaits his own coming across the dark waters to eternal light and life.

My sea Sir
Sincerely yours
H.P.P. Crease."

6Letter - Clement F. Cornwall to Charles Bennett, 15 Feb 1883.

Believe me to be
my dear sir
Yours faithfully

Lieut. Governor."
