5Newspaper Obituary (newspaper unknown).
Newspaper cutting of her obituary.
"We regret to announce the death of this highly respected gentleman which occurred on Tuesday last at his own residence. The deceased had been ailing for some months, but was able to be a week before his demise, which was not, however unexpected by his friends.
He lived respected by all around him, and in his death, greatly lamented by all who knew him, has thrown a gloom for the present over the whole district. In his nature he was remarkably kind and affectionate, thinking more about others than himself. Provost Ross' private life might be taken as a model of domestic happiness. His disposition was clearly evinced by the correspondence he maintained with his home at Cullen. His letters are full of well wishes for his parents, who seem to have ever been kept very near and dear to his heart.
The regularity, too, of his correspondence is another mark that he was continually thinking of his home, for scarcely a mail would arrive without bringing letters or papers from him, and any irregularity in this respect was cause of great uneasiness to his relations. The same loving disposition which he thus bore towards his parents was evinced in a greater degree in his own family. To enumerate his virtues would be superfluous, as they are universally known to the whole district.
The regret shown for his death is a sufficient proof of the great esteem in which he was held, and the public funeral allotted him can only be considered as a just reward for the virtues he practiced when he was alive.
Provost Ross was a self made and in not a few respects a remarkable man, having travelled far and seen much of the world. His father, Mr James Ross, was respectably known in his day and in his walk of life. The deceased gentleman was born in Cullen in 1818, and on spending the usual time at school was apprenticed at the age of eighteen to Messrs Reid and Co. then ship builders in Aberdeen. After serving the eminent firm for four years he accepted at 22, the situation as carpenter in a west Indian trader. In the same position he then undertook a voyage to china and was shipwrecked for a while running from Amoy to Hong Kong. This was the most remarkable event in his life for the vessel, after striking upon bank in the open sea, and having, in consequence, sprung a leak, again floated into deep water, and in this damaged condition was deserted by the captain and crew, expecting four, who in company with the deceased and chief mate, determined to keep by the vessel until they obtained assistance. While these six were below the ship was boarded by 200 Chinese. The deceased and chief mate being the only offices on board armed themselves with all the Armour that the ship could afford, a rusty sword and a fowling piece - attacked the intruders who, thinking that the whole ships crew was upon them rushed to there boats. They were soon after rescued by a vessel sent from Hong Kong by the British consul there, who had learned their condition.
Mr Ross' next advance in life was his appointment as manager, first by one ship building firm and then another, both of which had been established some years previously at Hong Kong. In this capacity he was zealous and conscientious, acted honourably towards his superiors, and was in turn greatly respected, and entirely trusted by them. During this period he had some narrow escaped from violent death, one of which he could never remember without a shudder. He was examining some repairs that were being effected on a vessel, when his foot slipped, and he fell from the staging on which he was standing, while a successful grasp at a projecting plank below alone prevented him from being swept away by the rapid current underneath. For five years he served in this position, at the end of which time he became the purchaser of some works, the property of an American gentleman who had retired from business, and was about to return home. Now he could use to advantage his former experience, which he did not neglect to do. His activity increased as his sphere of labour widened and success crowned his industry.
Among the first to enter his works in the morning, and the last man to leave them at the end of the day, he had thus everything under his own immediate control, not that he wanted subordinates to attend to the native operatives ( for not a few owe their first start in life to serving under him), but because he was ruled by the principle that masters ought always so to act as to be themselves responsible for everything that happens within the limits of their property. So closely did he apply himself to his profession, that his health became impaired, in consequence of which he sold his property, and in the year 1858 at the age of 40 returned home to Cullen after an absence of 16 years. On his return home, he lived retired for some time with his mother and sisters, his father having died in the year previous to his arrival. About months afterwards he commenced the erection of a handsome residence he afterwards named Cathay house, and which gave employment to the workmen of Cullen for upwards of a year. About this time the volunteer movement was spreading over the north. A proposal was made to raise a company in Cullen, and the deceased, having subscribed largely to their funds was unanimously appointed captain, a position for which he was eminently suited, having when abroad in Hong Kong, been a member of a similar company. As a volunteer, Captain Ross was zealous and most attentive to drill when no other business prevented him. It may safely be inferred that the success which has all along attended the organization of the 4th Banff Artillery has been in a great degree owing to his zeal. Among the members of the company the captain was respected as a gentleman and beloved as a officer.
In 1861 he married the eldest daughter of the rev Dr Henderson, the respected minister of the parish on which occasion his company showed their esteem for their superior officer by turning out in full uniform and giving him a spontaneous ovation. Captain Ross was about two years ago elected provost of his active burgh on the retirement of Mr Taylor, banker. Mr Ross's early death at the age of 49 has prevented him from enjoying the honour of chief magistrate for any length of time, but during the time he has been in office he has discharged his duties in a manner most satisfactory to the public and honourable to himself. Provost Ross listened patiently to every ones tale, and with a feeling heart considered all cases brought under his notice. He was generous in his disposition , a man of thorough integrity and always ready to befriend the oppressed, the widow and the fatherless. The death of such a man is a great loss to a comparatively small community."6Information provided by Kay Margaret Mumme.
