"Pillion Death Trap
Wycombe Lad's Fatal Journey
Driver Companion's Story

A tragic story of a motor-cycle journey by two High Wycombe lads was told at an inquest held at the War Memorial Hospital, at Henley, on Tuesday afternoon, on Cyril Spriggs, son of Mr. Bridgewater Spriggs, of Charnwood, Sands Turning, High Wycombe. After driving his own machine from Wycombe to Reading, and part way to Henley, deceased chnaged places with his companion, and the accident occurred susbsequently.
The driver of the machine was Frederick John Blackwell, aged 14, of the Royal Oak Hotel, Paul's Row, High Wycombe. It appeared that he mistook an open gate on a dangerous bend at the top of a hill for the continuation of the road. He attempted to rectify his mistake when too late, and the machine crashed through the hedge, throwing Spriggs some yards, and he fell heavily against a tree. At the inquest, a verdict of accidental death was returned.
The coroner for South Oxfordshire, Mr. A. Lett, conducted the inquest, and Mr. H. Monk was foreman of the jury. Supt. Wastie was also present. Dr. H.L. Brownlow said Spriggs died ten minutes after admission to hospital. Examination of the body showed a severe bruise on the right side of the face, which had caused a fracture of the skull. In witnesses' opinion death was due to laceration of the brain. The injuries were consistent with being thrown from a motor-cycle and falling onto the road or elsewhere.
Mr. Bridgewater Spriggs gave evidence of identification and said his son was 17 1/2 years of age. he had just left the grammar school, and on Monfday next would have been entering an Estate Agent's Office as an articled pupil. Witness last saw him at 8:45 am on Monday, when witness left home for Leicester. On parting with his son he said that he would be home at 9:17, and he replied "All right Dad, I'll look out for you". When witness returned home his other son met him and told him the news. His son's sight and hearing were good. The machine was a 2 1/2 hp Triumph, and was his son's own property.
Supt. Wastie submitted a plan and photographs of the spot on Spann Hill where the accident occurred. P.C. Johnson said he went to Spann Hill about 4:50 pm on Monday and saw a youth lying unconscious off the road and near a tree. A motor-cycle with the front forks and number plate damaged was lying near, and there was a skid mark on the road commencing three feet from the side and extending off the raod up the grass bank and through the hedge. Witness was informed that an ambulance had been sent for, but as it did not arrive he stopped a passing car and conveyed the lad to Henley hospital. The road where the accident happened was 20 feet wide and had two bends at the top of a steep hill, the accident occurring on the second bend which had a blind corner when coming from Reading.
Through the Hedge
Replying to a Juryman, witness said that the bicycle went through the hedge and into the little coppice coming to rest near the tree. Witness agreed with another Juryman that the road at this spot, when approaching from Reading, had a very bad camber.
Frederick Blackwell said that he and deceased left home about 2:20 and went to Reading via Maidenhead travelling over the new arterial road. They did not stop in Reading, but turned round in the town and came back towards Henley, as Spriggs said he wanted to go back by another route. Witness continued "when we came to the bottom of Spann Hill, Cyril pulled up and asked if I would like a turn at driving. I replied that I did not mind. Up to that time he had driven all the way, but it was the first time that I had driven this particular machine. Cyril then rode on the pillion, sitting on his mackintosh, which was strapped to the carrier, and held on to the back of the seat. He also had foot rests. He did not obstruct me in any way with his hold. We got round the first bend all right, and then I saw an open gate in front of me and I thought it was the road continuing through it. Just before we reached it I saw that I was wrong and I braked and also closed the throttle, but the footrest hit the bank, knocked my foot off the brake, and the machine went through the hedge, and I found myself on the ground and saw Cyril lying somewhat huddled near the tree. He shot over my head. I was unhurt myself, and I went to Cyril, who was unconscious; there was a mark on the tree where I think he had hit it.".
Replying to questions by the Coroner and the Jury, witness estimated his speed at 15 miles per hour, as he had come up the hill on top gear on a small machine. He had been over the road only once before, and that was after dark, so he knew practically nothing of the road at all. That machine was the smallest that he had driven short distances.
Replying to the Foreman of the Jury, witness said he had held a driver's licence since May 10th last, but knew a good bit about motor-cycles before he was able to take out a licence.
A Sad Case
The Coroner said it was an exceedingly sad case and he expressed sympathy with the lad's father and relations. From the evidence given it appears to be purely an accident; there was no evidence of excessive speed and pillion riding was not illegal at the present time.
The Jury agreed with the Coroner's suggestion as to verdict and the Foreman expressed sympathy with the relatives of the lad. As a cyclist, he considered that corner a very bad spot on a road that he knew well. There were four garage proprietors on the Jury, and three of them commented upon the very dangerous road, one expressing the opinion that this particular corner was the most dangerous spot in the district. They agreed that representations should be made to the County Council regarding it and the Coroner said he would note their request."
