"MAJOR CARSON OF BEDFORD IS DEAD

Was Teacher of English at Bedford Road Collegiate; Was 40 Years Old

Samuel G. Carson, 416 Twenty-third Street, east, teacher of English at Bedford Road Collegiate Institute, died in the City Hospital last night. A native of Ireland, Mr. Carson came to Canada in 1910 and before the war was principal of school at Kisbey.
Shortly after the outbreak of war he enlisted in the Canadian forces and before the close of the war had reached the rank of Major. Returning to the teaching profession, he became principal of the Gainsboro school and in 1925 began work at Bedford Road. He was a past master of the Masonic order, and past president of the Saskatoon Irish Society. His university work was taken at Trinity College, Dublin, and the University of Chicago.
After an illness of several months last winter he had been able to resume teaching but on Monday he had to enter the hospital for an operation.
Mr. Carson who was 40 years of age, leaves a widow and one son.
The funeral will be held at 2 0'clock Monday afternoon from St. Thomas United Church to Woodlawn Cemetery, Rev. J.A. Donnell, pastor, officiating. Members of Masonic Imperial Lodge, No. 60, also will take part in the service. McKague's Limited have charge of the arrangements."

"VAN HELDEN - Walter Reinier (Van, Ray) passed away on Saturday, June 16, 2001 at the age of 96 having been born in Birmingham, England on August 17, 1904. He was educated at Solihull Grammar School in England. Van is survived by his loving wife Helen, having recently celebrated their Seventieth wedding anniversary; his son Dave (Lorraine); grandchildren, Douglas (Colleen), Giorgia, Pamela Berry (Chris); and their mother Tina Van Helden. Van loved and adored his seven great grandchildren, Daniel, Rebecca, Catherine and Andrew Van Helden, Stephanie, William and Annette Berry. He was predeceased by granddaughter Sandra Van Helden in September 1998. Van came to Canada at the age of eighteen and farmed in the Stettler area. In 1934 he entered the general insurance agency field. In 1950 he and hsi wife Helen opened Van Helden Agencies Ltd.. In 1972 Van retired and his son Dave took over the company and today the business is run by his grandson (third generation) Douglas. During his many years in business he was honoured by his peers by being amde a life member of the Insurance Agents Association of Alberta. Van's total commitment in business to integrity, honesty, and service to his clients made himself and his company highly respected. Van is a past president and life member of the late Active Club of Calgary and a past member of the South East Kiwanis Club of Calgary. Van loved the outdoors and spent many hours fly-fishing particularly out of Campbell River and Knight's Inlet for salmon. The family wishes to extend special thanks to the staff and caregivers at Wentworth Manor and The Court for their excellent care and kindness. A private memorial service will be held on Wednesday, June 20 at Wentworth Manor. In Lieu of flowers, donations may be mailed directly to C.N.I.B., 15 Colonel Baker Place N.E. Calgary, AB T2E 4Z3."
