"Obituary.
MR. W. A. LACEY.
Quite a gloom was cast over the Neerim South district on Wednesday last, 27th March, when it became known that Mr William A. Lacey, of " Hazel-dean," Neerim South, had passed away after a long and painful illness, in his 60th year. Our late beloved friend had been near the borderland of death many times, but his strong constitution and temperate life, coupled with the best of medical skill, enabled him to live much longer than was expected. He suffered a great deal but he bore his sufferings with great patience and Christian fortitude which greatly impressed the members of his household and also those who came to visit him. He was confined to his bed during the last week of his life, and although his loved ones expected that his end was near it came suddenly, and as a great shock to his wife and family. He was conscious to the last, while some members of his family were shaking up his bed he suddenly collapsed in the arms of his eldest son, William. Truly a great man has fallen in Neerim. He was a devoted husband, an exceptionally kind father, and a true, noble, sincere friend to all. He was one of the grandest characters that the writer has hid the privilege/to meet. It was a treat to come within the radius of his aromatic influence, for one's life became scented as it were with a holy odour. "Though he being dead yet speaketh." This beautiful life will always be hung up in the halls of memory. He bore an irreproachable character, which will live after them. Ruskin says "There is one thing we cannot bury with a deceased gentleman, and that is his character. "It will be ever fragrant in the minds of his friends which are legion. Having known a gentleman like our late friend, one is reminded of the truthfulness of Longfellow's words-
Lives of great men all remind us,
We can make our lives sublime ;
And departing leave behind us
Footprints on the sands of time.
He was one of God's gentlemen, a truer friend never trod the vast territory of Gippsland and a more sympathetic, kind, loving, genial and affable nature would be hard to find. "The memory of the just is blessed.'' His house was an open one, and scores of people visited "Hazeldean "every year. The hospitality was of the best and freest, and one felt at home in a few minutes. He took a delight of giving of his best to his friends. Memories of holidays spent at the old home will never be forgotten. Our late brother was a good musician, and was exceptionally fond of music. He revelled in it, and his face would beam and light up with ecstacy as he listened to the melodious strains coming from the organ, piano, violin, &c., in his spacious dining room. It was a treat to hear him play the organ. Many were moved to tears as we sang at the service in the house prior to the funeral leaving.
Mr Lacey was proud of his large family, and one of his delights was to see them grow up to be steady, temperate and musical. They all grew up to call him blessed and now they revere his memory. He leaves behind him a sorrowing wife, six daughters and four sons. Our deepest loving, heartfelt sympathy goes out to them in their sad bereavement. But" they do not mourn as those without hope," They will meet again, yes, this grand father and husband "whom they have long since and lost awhile." Mr Lacey was very closely associated with the local Methodist Church, being a member for many years. He was senior circuit steward for a number of years, and his advice on Trust or Circuit matters was gladly welcomed. He spoke always after matured thought and his words always had great weight. He was a conscientious christian man and a liberal supporter of the ministry and the church of his birth. He was buried in the Neerim cemetery on Thursday, 28thMarch, when a large cortege followed his remains to their last resting place. Although there was short notice, about 50 vehicles, a number of horsemen and many pedestrians paid their last respects to this great man by following in mournful procession to "God's Acre." The Rev. T.Mundy, Methodist minister, conducted the services at the home and at the graveside, which were impressive and solemn. Rev. P. H. Rowlands, former pastor, was asked to speak at the grave. He said they were standing around the open grave of a great man whom God's bailiff had claimed. During his three years' sojourn inNeerim South he found Mr Lacey a true christian gentleman, a loving and true father and husband, and avery honorable citizen. He had never met a man he had loved more or as well. He was a man of exceptionally good qualities and it is the goodness which he possessed which impresses the world in these days. He obeyed the " golden rule " and all people that had spoken to him about our departed brother spoke in the highest terms of him. His financial dealings with hundreds of clients for over 25 years were never questioned. He did his utmost to do justice to his clients and also his employers. Great sorrow had suddenly come to Hazeldean. It is bad enough when sorrows come into a home, such as financial losses, sickness, but when death comes into the home and snaps the blossom of the bridal altar, tears a loving husband from a devoted wife, and a good father from a family, snaps the tie of a long and sacred association that was sorrow of the worst kind. On behalf of those standing around the bier he expressed their deepest sympathy to the bereaved and broken-hearted family and trusted that all present would try to emulate our departed friend in going about doing good. The mortuary arrangements were ably carried out by Mr P. Faragher. of Drouin. Thepall-bearerB were Messrs Wm, Mc Intosh, C. Moyes, Lance Coe, JosephCallow, Charles Jenkins and Les Hatton.
Mr Lacey was born at Downley, Highbycombe, England, in 1858.When 18 years of age he sailed toVictoria in the boat called "Cardigan Castle." He settled in the Preston District for 3 years then he removed to Ivanhoe where he was united in marriage in 1883 to Miss Amy Coe. (Mrs Lacey), youngest daughter of the late James and Jane Coe. Subsequently he removed to Neerim South in 1886, where he purchased land and remained on that farm for 22 years. He prospered in farming and 13 years ago he purchased the magnificent property called "Hazeldean," where he carried on successful farming until his death. He was a councillor for years and on one occasion occupied the presidential chair. Important business caused him to draw out of the council. He spent many years buying pigs for different companies. He was with "Huttons" for 16 years and worked the business up to a big concern. He then went buying forthe Dandenong Co-operative Co, and lastly he bought for Farmer and Sons, of Ballarat. In each case he gave satisfaction to all. He took a trip to England in 1898 to see his aged mother, 6 months after his mother died. He was delighted to think that he had seen his mother again before she died. He once told the writer that when he left home as a boy of 19, he left a set of pony harness hanging up in the shed ; his dear old mother would not allow anyone to even remove it and when Mr Lacey returned after 35 years absence there the harness was still hanging on the peg-but perished with age.
The life of a good man has ended, the earth, church, home and nation are the poorer. A seat is vacant in the grand old home but another seat is filled in heaven. "He will be missed." He leaves a splendid farm of the choicest land to his wife and family.
An In Memoriam service is to be held in the Neerim South, Methodist Church, on Sunday next, April 7th.
For ever with the Lord.
Happy soul thy days are ended,
All thy mourning days below ;
Go, by Angel guards attended
To the sight of Jesus go.
The hour of my departure's come,
I hear the voice that calls me home
At last, 0 Lord, let trouble cease,
Now let thy servant die in peace,
I leave the world without a tear,
Save for the friends I held so dear;
To heal their sorrows, Lord, descend
And to the friendless prove a friend.
Why do we mourn, departing friends
Or shake at death's alarms :
Tis but the voice that Jesus sends
To call them to His arms."

"LACEY, - In fond memory of our dear father, William A Lacey, who departed this life at his
residence 'Hazeldean,' Neerim South, on the 27th March, 1918.
To a beautiful life came a peaceful end
For he died as he lived, with God as his friend;
None in this world can fill his place,
Deep in our hearts his dear memory's encased.
Someday we'll understand.
-Inserted by his loving daughter and son-in-law,
Gertie, and Jack and grandchildren, Mavis and Marge."

"Mistook Warning.
CROSSING SMASH
Passengers in a car mistook his warning signal for a greeting, and waved, and the driver did not appear to see the danger of the approaching train Samuel Everrett told the Coroner (Mr. A. Moore) at the inquest at Yarram on Friday, on Michael Gerard O'Dowd, George Edward Tyler, and William James Lacey, pig-buyers. The three men who were in the car were killed in a smash at Hedley crossing on October 2.
The Coroner found that the men were accidentally killed. He was satisfied that the train driver sounded his whistle approaching the crossing, which was as safe as could be expected. Joseph Gladstone, fireman on the train, said he saw the car several hundred yards away, travelling very fast. It did not slacken speed."
