"DEATH OF THE TOWN CLERK OF CULLEN

On Tuesday the community of Cullen learned with exceeding regret of the death of Mr. Alex. Sim, Town Clerk, bank agent, and solicitor, Cullen, at the age of 73 years. Mr. Sim, who was constitutionally a strong man, caught a chill about three weeks ago. This developed into an attack of pneumonia, from which he never recovered. Deceased filled several prominent offices in the town, and his well known figure will be much missed in the daily life of Cullen.
Born at the farm Croftgloy on the Seafield estate, Mr. Sim was afterwards tenant of the farm, a tenancy he only discontinued at Whitsunday last. Mr. Sim began his education at Deskford Parish School, and afterwards entered the office of the late Mr. Thurburn, solicitor and bank agent, Keith, where he remained for several years. Proceeding to Edinburgh, he attended the classes at the university there, and in due course qualified himself as a solicitor. After a short period he returned to Keith as an assistant to Mr. Thurburn, and soon gained the confidence of his chief. Being anxious to push his way however, he while yet young, went to Cullen and commenced practice on his own account. On the withdrawal of the branch of the National Bank from Cullen about 48 years ago, the directors of the North of Scotland Bank resolved to open a a branch there, and Mr. Sim, who was then only 24 years of age, was appointed agent. Under his careful management, the business prospered until the bank found it necessary to erect the present comodious buildings on the Square. He had a remarkable faculty for overtaking a press of work, and he was also an early riser. He was local agent for the Seafield family, and was a notary public. Intimately acquainted with municipal business, the work of the town passed smoothly under his supervision and advice. His relations with a large clientele in private practice were of the most cordial character. His advise was pre-eminently disinterested and reliable, and he was held in high esteem by his brethren in the legal profession. His counsel geneally was adverse to litigation.
Mr. Sim took a great interest in the training of young men in his office, and several who have reached high positions in the legal and banking professions, as well as in commercial pursuits, attribute their success i no small degree to the training they received from him. About 18 years ago, on the retirement of the late Mr. Forbes, town clerk, Mr. Sim was appointed to that office. He also acted for a long period as clerk and traesurer to the School Board, and in a similar capacity to the Harbour Commissioners, and up till two years ago he was collector of burgh taxes. The deceased was for a number of years chairman of the Parochial Board, and resigned on becoming town clerk. He was always of a bright and cheerful disposition, and was greatly respected in the district. He was married to Miss Isabella Bartlet Paterson, sister of the late Mr. Paterson, Wanford, near Banff, by whom and by a grown-up family of two sons and three daughters he is survived. Much sympathy will be extended to them in their sad bereavement.
The funeral will take place on Saturday afternoon."

PUBLIC REFERENCES
In the Parish Church on Sunday forenoon Rev. Mr McLean, at the close of his sermon from 1st Cor. xv., 55, 56, 57 verses, said - Death has been busy in our midst during recent weeks - removing from us many familair forms and faces. But there is due thought uppermost in our minds to-day - the thought of of the great loss sustained, not only by this church, but by the whole community, in the removal by death of Mr Alexander Sim. Born in the neighbouring parish of Deskford, Cullen was known to him even as a boy, and the fact that at the early age of 24 years he was appointed to a position of great responsibility and trust in our town, shows what promise he gave of a useful and honourable career. And the promise of his early life has been fulfilled, for he has for nearly half a century rendered valuable service to the community. He held many and important offices, and it is well known with what care and faithfulness and ability he performed whatever duties he undertook. His advise in legal matters was much sought after; in him the poor ever found a friend, and he will be long and gratefully remembered by them as one who, by his wise counsel, helped them out of many a difficulty without any mention or thought of renumeration. During all these years he has been a member of this church, and he has never wavered in his loyalty to the Church of his fathers. There were few, if any, more regular worshippers in this church than he, and we shall indeed miss his familiar presence in our Sunday services. Thoroughly orthodox in his religious views, his was a very simple faith, and no words impressed him more than those of the Prophet Micah - :What doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?". And now after a short but trying illness, borne with patience and resignantion, having faithfully served his generation for more years than are given to most men, he has been gathered to his fathers. Yesterday it was our sad privilege to pay the last marks of respect to one who enjoyed in a marked degree the confidence and esteem of all who knew him, and who, for nearly fifty years, had taken a very active part in the public life of Cullen, and a deep interest in the life and work of this church. Our sympathy, as a congregation, goes out to his widow and family in their sad bereavement, and our prayer is that God will comfort them as He alone can. Bretheren, as one by one our friends and relatives and neighbours are passing away, let us see to it that our loins are girt and our lamps burning, so that for us to depart may be "to be with Christ, which is far better".

At the Town Council meeting on Monday night Provost Gregor said - Often in life there are great and sudden changes. At last monthly meeting of Council we had our respected Clerk Mr Sim with us. Only a week or two ago none of us thought that by another meeting we would have helped to lay Mr Sim in his last resting place. As a Council I am sure we are sorry and feel that we are the poorer by losing Mr Sim. For nearly eighteen years he has held the office of Town Clerk, and during that period very seldom was his chair vacant at our monthly meetings. He was always very careful and anxious that the business of the Council should be properly conducted. He was very jealous of the Burgh of Cullen and the business connected with it. Nothing grieved him more than when he thought the Council were not acting towards one another and conducting the business of the Burgh as gentlemen. He was respected by all customers who did business in his bank, and as a lawyer his advise was sought for by all classes, knowing that his advice would be sound and safe. He was kind-hearted to those who knew him best, and personally, I will lose a friend in Mr Sim. I knew him, perhaps better than any member of the Council, and although we did not always agree on the many questions that arose in connection with public matters, yet I always found him kind, courteous, and obliging, and willing to put himself to any amount of trouble on any difficult question that might arise. I am sure we all sympathise wityh Mrs Sim and family in their loss, and I move that we record in our minutes a sense of our loss and sympathy with Mrs Sim and family, and that an excerpt be sent to Mrs Sim.
This was agreed to, and the following was recorded in the minutes :-
The Town Council desire to express on record their sense of the great loss which they as a Council and the community at large have sustained through the death of the Town Clerk, Mr Alexander Sim, solicitor and bank agent, Cullen. Mr Sim for upwards of seventeen years acted as clerk to the Council, and during that time has discharged the several duties of his office with ability and with invariable dignity, courtesy, and fairness. His advice which was sought for and appreciated by the Council, was always marked by he extyremely careful consideration given to the subject, and his recognized practical knowledge and sound, good common sense have always proved of great assistance to the Council in the guidance and management of the affairs of the burgh. The Council further desire to express their sympathy with Mrs Sim and family in their bereavement, and resolve that an excerpt of this minute be sent to Mrs Sim."
