"OBITUARY.
THE MAYOR OF LEVIN. MR CHARLES BLENKHORN. Levin mourns to-day the loss of its leading citizen, the Mayor (Mr C. Blenkhorn) having passed away at half-past seven this morning after a brief last illness. His going hence leaves a gap -which it will be particularly hard to fill in times such as these, when, in the world at large, the very best of brains and judgment and determination are needed to guide public affairs through a sea of ever increasing difficulties. The late Mr. Blenkhorn possessed these qualifications in a noteworthy measure, and it may fairly be said that his record both in public amd private life was one of steady progress founded on unwavering courage and unquestioned ideals. His earlier years were lived in accordance with the true pioneer spirit, and in His maturer days his efforts were nobly reinforced by his good wife, whose record of social service is a shining example to future generations. Blenkhorn was born at Knaresbrough, Yorkshire, on April 12, 1870, the son of Christopher and Fanny Blenkhorn (nee Bolland), his father being a printer and bookseller. Coming to New Zealand at the age of 15, the deceased llearnt farming in the South Island and was later engaged in survey work there. He went to Coromandel In the gold rush, and after a course of the appropriate study there he obtained a mine manager’s certificate. When the South African War broke out, he enlisted in the Ist Contingent, which was signed on for two years. At the end of that term he returned to New Zealand, but enlisted again, going away with the 6th Contingent as an officer. In 1904 Mr Blenkhorn commenced the study of the law, at Palmerston North. After a year in a legal office there, he went to Wellington, to pursue his studies at the University. On being admitted as a barrister and solicitor, he came to Levin in May, 1908, and opened a branch of the Palmerston legal firm of Hankins and Fitzherbert. Within two years he acquired the interests of that firm in Levin and commenced to practice on his own account. Thus he continued till, in 1929, he took Mr D. P. Todd into partnership. On August 26th, 1908, Mr Blenkhorn was married at Masterton to Margaret Ann Muriel, only daughter of the late Mr and Mrs S. Inder, who spent their latter, years in Levin after Mr Inder’s retirement from the Post and Telegraph Department. Mr Blenkhorn continued to be interested in professional, public and social matters till within a few days of his death. He entered the municipal life of Levin in May, 1911, being elected to the Borough Council and remaining a member of it until December, 1915, when, following the retirement of Mr B. R. Gardner, to become Town Clerk, he was elected Mayor. This position hie retained through the War period and until 1919, when he did not seek re-election. Mr Blenkhorn’s second term of office as chief magistrate was from May, 1929, until his death. During the War he was the acknowledged leader in patriotic movements in the town, and when the great epidemic occurred in 1918 he did a vast amount of self-sacrificing work. Coincidently with his occupancy of the Mayoral chair for the last three years, he was the elected representative of the Borough on the Horowhenua Power Board and on the Foxton Harbour Board. Besides being patron of various institutions, he was a vice president of the Horowhenua A. and P. Association and of the Levin Racing Club, a past president and life member of the Levin Club. All these bodies owe a great deal to his sound counsel and conserving influence. He was a member of St. Mary’s Anglican Church, a Past Master and trustee of the Horowhenua Masonic Lodge, and a honorary member of Loyal Victoria Diamond Lodge, M.U., I.O.O.F. At social gatherings he was always a popular figure, and when, as at such times, his manifold duties were laid aside, he proved himself to be possessed of a rare fund of humour. This gift persisted in spite of a severe handicap, as for some years his health was imperfect owing to diabetic trouble. Mr Bleukhorn is survived by his wife and eight children: Mrs M. Coker (Auckland), John, Robert, Guy, Margaret, Barbara, David, and Elizabeth.
The general sympathy of the town and district 'goes out to Mrs Blenkhorn and family in their bereavement. The deceased had a brother, the only other member of the family, Mr J. K. Blenkhorn, of Auckland, who died in August last year. The Union Jack is being flown at half-mast on the Municipal Buildings to-day, out of respect for the memory of the late Mayor, and a large number of meetings and events planned for the next few days have been postponed. The funeral will take place at 1 p.m. on Saturday."
