"Obituary.
By the death of Mr James Styles, which occurred at Riverton on Thursday, a colonist of long-standing and a prominent figure in colonial public works has been removed. The deceased arrived in Victoria, about 51 years ago, and about ten years later came to New Zealand, drawn by the early gold discoveries. All his life Mr Styles was connected with large railway and other works. Before leaving England he was engaged upon the London-Croydon railway — one of the first in the British Isles—and he was accustomed to mention that the first train to run upon it was not propelled by steam but by atmospheric pressure. Mr Styles, shortly after his arrival in Victoria, was associated with Messrs Cornish and Bruce in constructing the first Victorian Railway, that from Melbourne to Sandhurst, in the Bendigo district, and he was connected, with the same contractors in their enterprise of carrying through the Big Hill tunnel. As has been said, Mr Styles came to New Zealand with the gold rush in 1860 or 1861. He was the contractor for the first jetty in Dunedin harbour, and his structure did good service for many a day until the harbour improvements buried it out of existence. About the same time he entered into a contract for a section of the Dunedin-Port Chalmers road. He then filled the position of foreman of works to Messrs Conyers and McKay, who constructed the Port Chalmers graving dock. When that work had been finished he joined Messrs D. and G. Proudfoot as manager of a number of their undertakings, amongst which was the Dunedin - Port Chalmers railway, the first of the Dunedin and suburban tramways, the Balclutha-Clinton section of the Dunedin-lnvercargill line, and the Riverton-Orepuki line. He next went with the Messrs Proudfoot to New South Wales and superintended the carrying out of several of their contracts there, among the number being the New England railway line. He then joined his brother in constructing the Violet town section of the Melbourne-Sydney railway. After that he returned to New Zealand, where he has lived a life of seclusion at Riverton in a house put at his disposal by his son, Mr F. W. Styles, lately stationmaster at Invercargill and now at Auckland. Since he went to live at Riverton the only work Mr Styles undertook was the position of inspector of works at the construction of the water race, and pentstock for the Southland Frozen Meat Company's works at Mataura. The deceased is survived by his widow and three sons and four daughters, among them being Mrs J. C. Mackley, of Invercargill; Mr F. W. Styles, stationmaster at Auckland; and Mr Henry Styles, locomotive superintendent on the Chilian railways, who, it will be remembered, visited Invercargill some months ago in the course of a tour of the world which he was making in the interests of his Government."
