Before Mr. J.S. Bartum (in the chair), General Benson, Mr. T.G.P. Hallett
Emma Howell, 61, of 65 Avon-street, was charged with cutting and wounding Rose Amelia Hiller, of 9 Lampard's-buildings, with intent to do her grievous bodily harm on the 16th inst. Prosecutrix said she was standing outside a public house on Westgate-buildings at 11 o'clock on Saturday night. She had just had a glass of beer and was alone. Mrs. Howell, who had been in the public house, came out and prosecutrix asked her if she should take her home. She replied "yes" and prosecutrix took her to her room, in Avon-street. They both sat down. Prisoner hearing her son outside called out to him. When he came up prisoner took a knife off the dresser and said she would stab him. Prosecutrix got between them and prisoner said "If he don't have it thee shall't have it" and with that she stabbed prosecutrix on the hand. Before this prisoner had upbraided her son for talking to a woman downstairs. In reply to him mother's remonstrances, he said he should speak to her. Prisoner did not offer to assist her; she was taken to the Hospital by Elizabeth Stevens. The prisoner was not so drunk as not to know what she was doing. They were talking for an hour before the son came. - Mr. F. Lace, house surgeon at the Hospital, said prosecutrix had a wound on the back of the left hand, an inch and a quarter long; it was down to the tendons, but not through them. There were also two or three slight scratches on the back of the hand. Prosecutrix was not in any danger from the wound, but she would not be able to use her hand for a few days. - Elizabeth Stevens, a widow, living at 65 Avon-street, stated that on Saturday night between twelve and one she heard a few words in Mrs. Howell's room. As she went downstairs prosecutrix came out of Mrs. Howell's room. She noticed that she had a cut on the back of the hand, and she took her to the Hospital. - P.C. Eves stated that on Sunday morning between twelve and one o'clock, from information received, he went to 65 Avon-street, where he apprehended prisoner. He found her sitting in a chair holding her head in her hands. He aroused her. In reply to the charge, and when he picked up a knife on the dresser and showed it to her, she said, "It was done by the latch of the door and that is the knife that I fastened the latch down with." Her son came in and began to cry, saying, "Wny did you do it mother?" She made no reply. Witness told him to come to the station. He came as far as the top of Avon-street but witness had seen nothing of him since. At the Police station, in reply to the charge, prisoner said, "I did not do it with intent; she had no business in my place". -- The case was adjourned for a week for the attendance of the son. The bench refused bail."2Newspaper - Bath Chronicle, Page 2, 27 Nov 1890.

Before Mr. J.S. Bartrum (in the chair), and General Penson
Emma Howell (61) of 65 Avon-street, was charged on remand with having wounded a girl named Rose Amelia Hillier, of 9 Lampard's-buildings, with a knife, on the 16th November. - When the case was gone into last week, Hiller said that she went home with Howell from a publichouse because prisoner was intoxicated. When in her house, Howell, she alleged, attempted to stab her son with a knife, but, being prevented by Hillier, struck at her instead, and cut the back of her left hand. - The son was now called and gave his evidence with some reluctance, so much so that the Clerk told him that although it might be painful to give evidence against his mother he must regard the obligation of the oath he had taken. His statement was that he went home on the night in question after 12 o'clock. He did not go up immediately to his mother's room, but stood outside the door talking to Eliza Stephens (who gave evidence at the previous hearing). His mother looked out of the window and siad, "Talking to that?" (meaning Stephens). When he entered the room the prisoner went to hit him with a knife but Rose Hillier jumped in between and had the blow. She went at him directly without saying a word, and did not say to the girl "if if he doesn't have it ye shall". Witness said, "You have been and stabbed the girl," and prisoner replied "Take her to the Hospital." When he asked his mother "What did you do that for?" she did not answer him. - The prisoner was committed for trial at the Quarter Sessions."3Newspaper - Bath Chronicle, Page 2, 15 Jan 1891.
"Bath Quarter Sessions
The Epighany Quarter Sessions for the city were held at the Guildhall, on Friday, before the Recorder, Mr. H.C. Folkard, who was accompanied on the bench by General Burn, Mr. C.F. Marshall, and Mr. R.C. Haywood. There were only two prisoners for trial.
Kindness Rewarded
Emma Howell, Avon-street, on bail, pleaded guilty to unlawfully and maliciously wounding Rose Amelia Hillier with a knife at Bath on the 15th or 16th of November. Sir Sherston Baker prosecuted. The prisoner had been taken home in a state of semi-intoxication by the prosecutrix. Hillier remained in the room talking when the prisoner's son came in. Prisoner remonstrated with him for talking to a young woman and was attempting to strike him with a knife, when Hillier interposed and received the blow on her hand. - The Recorder, in passing sentence, siad Hillier did two kindnesses to prisoner; she took her home while intoxicated and interposed to save her from wounding her son. The prisoner was sentenced to three month's imprisonment with hard labour."4Census 1841 - England.
