"OBITUARY
Mr William Brady
It is our sad duty to chronicle the death of Mr William Brady, which occurred suddenly at his residence Papamoa, on Wednesday night. Deceased has resided in the Te Puke and Papamoa districts for over thirty years. For a long period he conducted a blacksmithing and coach building business at Te Puke, and then moved to Papamoa, where he engaged in farming up till the time of his death. He was born at Otahuhu, and in early life took a keen interest in racing matters. He was a prominent amateur rider, and rode numerous winners on racecourses all over the North Island. He also owned and trained many notable racehorses, including Garbinier (a great performer), Zulu, Steelcrap, Te Whetamaramara, Saunterer, Satellite, Papamoa, Princess of Thule, Mitiora and many others. He also rode in a match at Taurauga many years ago, the winning horse being owned by Mr J Ellis. After moving to Te Puke deceased took a keen interest in the breeding of thoroughbreds, and brought to the district such wellknown sires as Vortex, Utepapa, Lord of the Isles, Purepo, and Formative; also, a number of high class mares. It may safely be asserted that he did more than any other man in the Bay of Plenty to improve the breed of light horses on the coast. Genial and warm hearted, on scores of occasions he went out of his way to do a good turn for a neighbour or a friend. One instance, typical of his consideration for others, is worth recording. A neighbour at Te Puke met with a serious accident, necessitating urgent medical attention, and deceased left his own business and drove the injured man to and from Taurauga over a road that was almost impassable and not to be compared with the road as we know it today. The late Mr Brady claimed a legion of friends, who will learn of his death with deep regret. He leaves to mourn their loss a widow and adult family, to whom the greatest sympathy will be extended in their bereavement. The funeral took place at Te Puke today and was largely attended."3Newspaper - Te Puke Times, Page 2, 11 Jul 1919.
"It is our painful duty to record the death, on Wednesday last, of Mr Wm Brady, of Papamoa, a very old and highly esteemed settler. In his younger days Mr Brady was a member of the Armed Constabulary at Taupo, and came to this district many years ago. He started a blacksmithing business in Te Puke, but later settled at Papamoa, where he had resided ever since. It is impossible to speak too highly of his personal qualities, for he was a friend of all who knew him. Genial, kindly, and hospitable, he will be sadly missed, He leaves a large grown-up family of sons and daughters. The funeral took place this morning, and was largely attended. The Rev. Father Van Westeinde officiated at the graveside."4Newspaper - Auckland Star, Volume L; Issue 165; page 16, 12 Jul 1919.

"DEATHS
BRADY. - On June 9 at Redwood City Sanatorium, California, USA, after being discharged from United States Army, William Joseph, beloved son of Hirita and William Brady, Papamoa; in his 31st year.
Dearly loved: sadly mourned."
1Newspaper - Bay of Plenty Times, Volume XXIX; issue 4226; page 2, 18 Nov 1901.
"A very serious accident is reported to have occurred to a boy, son of Mr W Brady. The nature of the accident is said to be that the boy fell on a hay knife wounding himself in such a way that the intestines are protruding. Dr Fooks, who is in Tauranga to-day, (Saturday), has been wired to visit the sufferer on his way out."2Newspaper - Bay of Plenty Times, Volume XXIX; issue 4227; page 2, 20 Nov 1901.
"We are very sorry to learn that the accident to the youngest child of Mr J. W. Brady, Papamoa, which was mentioned in our Te Puke correspondent's letter of last issue, terminated fatally on Sunday. It appears that the little lad, aged 10, was climbing a haystack and must have dislodged the hay-knife sticking therein, probably by putting his foot on the handle ; the child and knife fell to the ground together, the latter piercing the lower part of the child's body and inflicting: a frightful wound, severing some of the intestines and injuring both liver and lungs as it passed upwards. Dr Fooks, on arrival, found the injuries such as to put all hopes of saving the poor lad's life out of the question but did what he could to ease his sufferings, and death ensued early on Sunday morning. Deceased was about 10 years old and a bright, intelligent little fellow and his terrible death is a great shock to his parents, who have the deepest sympathy of the whole community in their affliction."3Newspaper - Bay of Plenty Times, Volume XXIX; issue 4227; page 2, 20 Nov 1901.
"The sad accident which befel young Brady terminated fatally, the remains being interred in the cemetery on Tuesday afternoon in the presence of a large concourse of mourners, including the school children. Six of deceased's juvenile comrades carried the coffin from the buggy to the grave and the Rev. Father Bloomfield officiated. Deceased, whose age was ten, was extremely bright and well-liked by old and young and as a vocalist has on several occasions shown his ability. As a boy he made himself popular by his cheerful demeanour and everyone will miss little Ned. The large number of wreaths was some evidence of the widespread grief, and the greatest sympathy was expressed for the parents and relatives at their irreparable loss."
