"MAGISTRATE'S COURT
A CASE OF BIGAMY
ACCUSED PLEADS GUILTY
Mr P. V. Frazer, S.M., presided over yesterday's sitting of the Magistrate's Court. Harry Blanford was called upon to answer a charge of having gone through a form of marriage with Kate Winstanley, knowing her to be already married. Kate Winstanley was also charged with bigamy. Mr. H.F. O'Leary appeared for the defendant in each case. The female accused, giving evidence in Blanford's case, admitted that she married Norman Charles Winstanley, a member of the Thirty-second Reinforcements on the day before he sailed. When Blanford asked her to marry him she told him she was already married. He made application, however, for a license, and she went through the form of marriage under the name of Catherine Stanley. The ceremony was held in St. Thomas's Church on March 6, 1919. When witness said to Blanford that she was doing wrong, he replied. that he knew that he was doing wrong also. The police tendered the evidence of the Registrar of Births, Deaths, and Marriages with regard to the marriage of the female accused to Norman Winstanley. The Rev. W. Fancourt gave evidence concerning the form of marriage that the two accused went through at St. Thomas's. An officer in the employ of the Defence Department gave evidence that Kate Winstanley had been drawing an allotment made to her by her husband, who was shortly to return to New Zealand. Both the accused pleaded guilty, and were committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. Blanford was refused bail. Winstanley was released on bail of 50 pounds, with one surety of 50 pounds."

"DOUBLE -BARRELLED BIGAMISTS GO FREE.
Harry Blandford and Kate Winstanley, the double-barrelled bigamists, who pleaded guilty last week in Wellington to that offence were placed in the dock together. Lawyer H. F. O'Leary appeared on their behalf and said that in pleading for them one had to admit that they had not shown overmuch respect for the marriage tie. There was this much to be said, however, that in doing what they had done, the pair had not been guilty of deceiving one another They both knew the step they were taking. Although the female prisoner had continued to draw her husband's military allotment, after going through a form of marriage with Blandford, she had used the money to pay off Winstanley's debts and to send his sister to school. In regard to Blandford, he was unfortunately one of war's wrecks. He had returned very grievously wounded, after splendid service at the front, and was now In receipt of a life pension. His Honor said that the only trouble .Blandford had apparently been in was a youthful indiscretion committed some thirteen years ago. Since then, it appeared, he had saved a life at Foxton at personal risk, and had also rescued two or three lives from a fire at great personal risk. Unfortunately he was a drink victim, though, perhaps, he was not to blame for that. If it be a fact that the army people have been in the habit of giving soldiers a rum ration, perhaps they were really to blame. We were now getting soldiers amongst us who had acquired drinking habits. Blandford was required to report to the Probation Officer every two months for three years and to take out a prohibition order against himself, and to go and reside in the country. The female accused was admitted to 12 months' probation, and upon hearing this she repeated her performance at the lower court and fell in a dead faint in the dock with a resounding crash."
