INQUEST. An inquest was held at the Courthouse this morning before Mr. S.E. McCarthy, coroner. Mr. B. S. Story deposed that he was called to the deceased's house at 8.30 last evening and saw the body of deceased which had been carried in from the back. The left side of the face and the upper jaw had been blown away and the vault of the head had been broken from the concussion, His injuries were sufficient to cause death almost instantaneously. The barrel of the gun must have been placed near the deceased's mouth and the gun would be resting on the ground. Cecil S.H. Lane, taxi-driver, residing in McLean street, stated that deceased was his father. He came home last evening about 7.30, and when he opened the door, witness saw that he had been drinking. He looked distressed and as soon as he entered, he made straight for witness whom he attempted to hit. Witness' wife stepped between them. Deceased then used obscene language. They tried to pacify him, saying that there was a piano teacher in the house giving witness' daughter a lesson. They had to ask the teacher to leave the house owing to the language. Witness then telephoned to Sergeant Hogan to ask him to give deceased a talking to next day. When he returned from the telephone, witness' son said deceased had a gun. Told his wife to shut the back door as there was no telling what he might do. The next thing witness heard was a shot fired by the front gate. Mrs. Lane became alarmed and witness told her not to be alarmed, and so long as she did as he said, they would be safe. Heard deceased walking past the side of the house towards the back door. Witness was then in the passage. Deceased called out to Mrs. Lane, and the next thing witness heard was another shot. Rang up the police, who arrived shortly afterwards and found deceased dead near the back door. On one or two occasions when under the influence of drink, deceased had threatened to blow his brains out, but witness did not think he intended doing so. He was in fairly good circumstances and had no financial worry. Witness could only attribute deceased's action to the influence of drink. The deceased was a good father and the only disagreement witness had had with him was over his drinking. Martha Lane, wife of the previous witness, deposed that when deceased came to the back door after firing the first shot he called out to witness, "Mattie, tell me do you love me. Witness replied. "Yes, I do." Deceased said, "I am going to do it," and then the shot was fired. Constable W.J. Connor, gave evidence that he and Constable McLean found the body of deceased with a double-barrelled gun between his legs and the end of the barrel under his face. Both barrels had been discharged. A verdict was returned that diseased died from a gunshot wound self-inflicted whilst he was under the influence or alcohol. The Coroner said he desired to draw attention to the fact that this was the third suicide he had inquired into in less than a fortnight and in each case the operating cause of death was alcohol."
"TRAGIC SUICIDE.
MR. W. LANE, OF HASTINGS. A sensation was caused at Hastings last evening when it became known that Mr. W. Lane, a well-known and respected citizen, had been found dead under circumstances pointing to a determined suicide. The body was discovered in the yard at the back of the residence of his son in McLean street with whom he resided. His head was shattered and a double-barrelled gun was near the body. Deceased, who was a native oi Devonshire, arrived in this district in the early clays and took up road contracting in which he was engaged until a few years ago when he retired. He was Mayor of Hastings for one term and previously served as a councillor. He was also a member of the Hawke's Bay Licensing Bench. The late Mr. Lane was of a very generous disposition and gave, liberally to many local institutions. He took a keen interest in various branches of sport and all matters in connection with the Friendly Societies and kindred bodies had his practical and wholehearted support. He was 63 years of age and a widower. He Leaves one son and one daughter. Mr. Lane formerly served in the British Navy as a marine.2Civil Registration, Marriage - New Zealand, 1875; Reg.
