"Death of Mr R. P. Gibbons.
Our readers will regret to learn of the death of Mr. R. P. Gibbons, head of the firm of R. P. Gibbons and Sons, which took place at his residence, View Road, Mt. Eden, Auckland, yesterday Tlhe deceased gentleman, who was 64 years of age at the time of his death, was born at St. Johns, Newfoundland, in 1842, and came to New Zealand with his parents in 1851, being at that time 9 years of age. The late Mr Gibbons was educated in the colony and was afterwards associated with his father in sawmills on the Manukau, and on the death of his father (the late Mr. John Gibbons) the deceased, who was always a man of considerable enterprise and business ability carried on the business and later on with his brother, extended their ramifications, added to the number of their mills, and succeeded in establishing a splendid business. At Waipara, Hokianga, and at Kopu mills were erected, while at Hiikurangi a fourth milliing plant is now under construction. The deceased gentleman had no desire for public life and took no active part in local or general politics, but he played his part as a colonist with conspicuous ability. He was a considerate employer, a conscientious, and progressive business man, and a good friend to those in need of a helping hand, and as stated there are many outside the circle of his relations, who will deeply mourn his death. The late Mr Gibbons, who was well known at the Thames, leaves a wife, three sons, and 7 daughters. One of the sons (Claud) is manager of the Kaipara mill, while the other two sons (Angus and Charles) have been assooiated with the Kopu mill for years. The sons of Mr Gibbons' brother (who died some 4 years ago) have also been connected with the business, which has been so successfully run with the late Mr R. P.
