"DEATH OF CAPTAIN ANDERSON.
General regret will be felt in town in the announcement of the death of Captain Anderson, of the Permanent Militia Force, who passed away quietly last night in his 58th year, in the presence of his son, Mr. Frank Anderson, of Makuri, the only member of his family remaining. Captain Anderson was born in Belfast (Ireland), and came out to Auckland in July, 1863. Immediately upon landing he was pressed into military service, joining No. 7 Company, Waikato Militia, going straight into the field with the company, and serving for 19 months in the Waikato and Thames districts. He saw much service, and won the esteem of the natives. On returning to Auckland, he became a clerk in the Commissariat Department, where he remained until the Imperial troops were sent Home. He then went off to the West Coast goldfields, but did not prove a lucky miner. The year 1868 found him a Civil Service Clerk in Wanganui, and later he was appointed to act as chief clerk in Colonel Gorton's department, taking up the appointment in Wellington in May of the following year. During the next year, Mr. St. John Brannagan, Commissioner of Police, offered Mr Anderson the post of military storekeeper, which he accepted, and filled until death has relieved him of the duty. Deceased was married in 1869 to the eldest daughter of the late Mr. Henry White, of Khandallah, and Mrs. Anderson predeceased him by some ten years. A niece, Miss A. C. L. Anderson, is one of the nursing staff which has been sent to South Africa by the Army Nursing Service. A military funeral is to be given the deceased officer on Sunday, notice of which will be found in another column."
