"MRS MARY HILDRETH.
In a recent issue we briefly referred to the death of Mrs Hildreth, chronicled by the Nelson papers. Deceased, with her husband, the late Mr William Hildreth, arrived in Nelson 54 years ago m the ship Phoebe, the last emigrant vessel under the New Zealand Company. During the Jubilee week Mrs Hildreth frequently spoke of her remembrance of the Jubilee of George III, when she was a little girl. Mr Hildreth was one of the original land purchasers under the New Zealand Company. He settled on his holding, which he named Mount Heslington. For many years he carried on farming but finally he left his farm, and went to live with his daughter at Neudorf, Upper Moutere, where he died in 1880, at the age of 83, He took an interest in educational matters, and his name appears among the list of the first Trustees of the Nelson School Society, his colleagues being Matthew Campbell, T. J. Thompson, A. G. Jenkins, and Dr Renwick. After the death of her husband, Mrs Hildreth went to live at Hokitika with her second daughter, Mrs Smith, wife of Mr John Smith, Secretary of the Marlborough Education Board, and at that time Inspector of Schools for Westland, where she remained about five years. She then removed to Brightwater, near her old home, and, with her youngest daughter, lived under the roof of her eldest daughter, Mrs Dencker. A few months ago they removed to Nelson, where the old lady passed away in her 94th year. Those who remember her in past years must do so with kindly feelings, as she was ever hospitable and charitable. In the early days she had to endure many privations, which she bore bravely, being always cheerful and bright. The latter years of her life were solaced by the affectionate and incessant devotion of her youngest daughter, who was her constant companion and indefatigable nurse to the last."
