"OBITUARY.
MR. JOHN KIRKCALDIE.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT] WELLINGTON, Sunday. The death took place on Saturday morning of Mr. John Kirkcaldie, founder of the firm of Kirkcaldie and Stains and for many years one of the leading figures in the commercial and financial world of Wellington. He had retired from active business some years ago owing to advancing age and declining health and the end was not unexpected. With him passes one of the stalwart pioneers of commerce and another link with the days of the Dominion. The late Mr. Kirkcaldie was in his eighty-eighth year. Born in Kennoway, Fifeshire, Scotland, in 1838, he served a four years apprenticeship to the drapery trade in his native town. This was followed by a period of two years in Dublin and a further period of a year in London. The ambition came to him to try his fortune further afield and in 1861, at the age of 23 years, he sailed from London on the Damascus, an Aberdeen liner, for Australia, landing in Sydney in May of that year. In Australia he spent another period in acquiring knowledge of the colonial trade and then with the late Mr Robert Stains he came to New Zealand with the intention of going into business on his own account. This was in 1863 and Wellington, where the partners had decided to set up, was but a small place. The firm of Kirkcaldie and Stains was attended with success and in 1868 the partners purchased two sections in Lambton Quay and Brandon Street from the Provincial Government at £l2 and £10 a foot respectively, figures which seem remarkable to-day. From this nucleus the premises grew. With the growth of business further adjoining sites were acquired and handsome buildings were erected from time to time. The deceased took an active share in the various commercial enterprises with which Wellington was associated. He was a director of the Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company almost from inception and chairman for some years before and at the time when the railway was acquired by the New Zealand Government. He was also a director of several local companies. He retired from the chairmanship of his firm at the end of 1918 and resigned his directorship in January, 1919. Mr. Kirkcaldie is survived by his widow, two sons, Sidney and Edward Keith Kirkcaldie, and four daughters, Mrs. A. W. Ratteray, Mrs. C. H. Mirams, Mrs. C. E. Finch and Mrs. A. B. Rose."5Civil Registration Index - New Zealand, Marriage 1870 / 5721.

"OBITUARY
MRS. JOHN KIRKCALDIE
Many who have known her generous nature and her charming personality will regret to hear of the death of Mrs. Mary. Ann Kirkcaldie, widow of the late Mr. John Kirkcaldie, head of the firm of Kirkcaldie and Stains. She was the daughter of the late Mr. Edward Hall, of the engineering firm of J. and E. Hall, Dartford, Kent, and her mother before her marriage -was Miss Elizabeth Stains, sister of Mr. Robert Stains. The. late Mrs. Kirkcaldie came to New Zealand in 1868 to visit her uncle, Mr. Robert Stains, and in 1870, married Mr. John Kircaldie. Of a very retiring disposition, Mrs. Kirkcaldie was all her life very fond of gardening, and combining the wonderful qualities of the Victorian era with the broadened outlook of modern times, she was loved by all who knew her. A wonderful mother and sister, she had an unusual depth of understanding, and her loving kindness was felt by a great many who were fortunate enough to know her. Most of her spare time she spent in making garments for the poor children, which she sent to orphanages and societies. She was actively interested in the Society for the Protection of Women and Children, of which she was at one time president, and was for many years treasurer. She was also keenly interested in the Plunket Society, to which she and her family have always been generous contributors. She was a member of St. John's Church, Willis Street, and was always a regular attendant. Aged 84 years, the late Mrs. Kirkcaldie is survived by six of her eight children. They are Messrs. Sidney and Keith Kirkcaldie (Wellington) and Mesdames Rattray, C. H. Mirams, and Finch (all of Wellington), and Mrs. A. B. Rose (of Hampshire, England). She has 17 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Her sisters are Mrs. Taylor (Kelburn) and Misses A. L. Hall, and J. Hall (Wadestown). Mrs. Herbert Kirkcaldie (Wadestown) and Mrs. Norman Kirkcaldie (Levin) are daughters in-law."4Civil Registration Index - New Zealand, Marriage 1870 / 5721.

"OBITUARY
MR. SIDNEY KIRKCALDIE
The death occurred at Tauranga on Sunday of Mr. Sidney Kirkcaldie, a former chairman of directors of Kirkcaldie and Stains, Ltd. He had been living at Tauranga in retirement for the last three years. Mr. Kirkcaldie held numerous directorships prior to his retirement some twelve years ago. Among other positions he was chairman of the local board of directors of the Commercial Union Assurance Company, chairman of directors of Inglis Bros, and Company, vice-chairman of the New Zealand Guarantee Corporation, and president of the Trentham Scholarship Funds and the citizens' committee of the Karitane Plunket Hospital. He was bom in Wellington in 1873 and educated at Wellington College and Wanganui College. He commenced his commercial career as a junior with Kirkcaldie and Stains, Ltd., in 1894 and in 1899 went to England for experience, returning to New Zealand two and a half years later. He was subsequently appointed chairman of directors of the firm. Mr. Kirkcaldie was a member of the former Karori Borough Council for eighteen months. In 1903 he married Miss Elsie May MacGregor, whose death occurred about nine years ago. He was a member of the Savage, C.T.A., Wellington Racing, and Hutt Golf Clubs, and also belonged in former years to the Rotary Club and Wellington Art Society.
Probably the greatest public service Mr. Sidney Kirkcaldie gave to New Zealand was during the last war, when, together with Mr. Alexander Macintosh and Mr. J. Morrison, he formed a committee for the purchase of the whole of the equipment for the troops in New Zealand. Their services were on a voluntary basis and resulted, according to one authoritative statement, in a saving of millions of pounds to the Dominion.
Mr. Kirkcaldie is survived by two sons, Flying Officer Sidney Hugh (Peter) Kirkcaldie, R.N.Z.A.F., Wellington, and L.A.C. Ian Kirkcaldie, R.N.Z.A.F., now on active service overseas, and one daughter, Mrs. Peter Nash, of England, now living in Wellington. Mr. E. K. Kirkcaldie, of Wellington, is a brother, and Mrs. A. M. Rattray, Mrs. C. M. Mirams, Mrs. O. Finch, all of Wellington, and Mrs. G. Rose, of England, are sisters.
The funeral will take place tomorrow morning. A short service will be held at the residence of Flying Officer Kirkcaldie, 19 Talavera Terrace, commencing at 10 o'clock, after which the cortege will leave for the Crematorium, Karori Cemetery."

"OBITUARY
MRS. SIDNEY KIRKCALDIE
Widespread and general regret will be expressed at the sad news of the death of Mrs. Sidney Kirkcaldie, which has come as a terrible shock to her husband and family, following on an operation which became necessary rather suddenly. Mrs. Sidney Kirkcaldie was one of the "gracious" people of the world, always courteous, kindly, sweet-natured, and ready to help every good cause that came her way. Her fine personality was outstanding, and she will be missed generally, as well as by the members of her family. She was an enthusiastic worker for the Plunket Society, and was a chief friend and supporter of St. Mary's Homes, Karori, as well as of the Kindergarten movement, and many others for the good of children and older people as well. Her general kindliness was most marked, while her charming manners endeared her to a large circle of friends. Sho was also an enthusiastic gardener. Mrs. Sidney Kirkcaldie was the daughter of Mr. Thomas MacGregor, of Sydney, and she leaves two sons, Peter and lan, and one daughter, Mrs. William Nash, of Kent, England, who arrived from England several weeks ago, with her two children, and had the privilege of being with her mother in the last weeks of her life, bringing great joy with her presence and that of the grandchildren. Very deep sympathy will be felt with all the members of the family in their sad and sudden bereavement."
