CORONER'S INQUEST
"Fatal Accident in Molesworth Street.
Last evening, just about 6 o'clock, an accident oocurrod in Molesworth-street at its intersection with Tinakori-road, which unfortunately had a fatal termination. It appears that Mr. Edward White, a young man residing in Upper Kaiwarra, was riding his horse towards his home at a smart canter when the horse stumbled against a boy who was running across the thoroughfare. His horse fell and his rider came heavily to tho ground. The lad, whose name is Cecil Frederick Gulliver, was knocked down with considerable force, and on being picked up was removed to his residence in Grant -road, where he was attended by the Hon. Dr. Grace, who dressed the several wounds and cuts on his legs and head. So far as the youth is concerned, the consequences are considered to be of a rather serious nature, and in Mr. White's case the injuries sustained were so extensivo that the sufferer never rallied, and died this morning at about 1 o'clock. The accident was witnessed by Mr. Herbert Dorset, Grant-road, and Mr. Henry Curtis, Molesworth-street, who state that the deceased was in no degree to blame for the catastrophe. When picked up Mr. White was unconscious, and was immediately removed to the Princess Hotel, Molesworth-street, under the directions of Dr. Grace, who did all that medical science could suggest, but in vain. Mr. White, who was a single man, was lieutenant in the Kaiwarra Rifles, and was much respected. On enquiry this morning we learned that young Gulliver, who is about 16 years of ago, has sustained concussion of the brain, in addition to an injury to the knee, and is not yet out of danger. The Kaiwarra Rifles intended to have given the late Lieutenant White a military funeral, but in deference to the wishes of his relatives this course will not be taken. The rifle match which was to have been contested to-day between the Kaiwarra and Newtown corps has, however, been postponed as a mark of respect.
An inquest on the remains of the unfortunate young man was held at the Princess Hotel this morning before Dr. Johnston, Coroner, and a jury of which Mr. H. D. Edwards was foreman. Herbert Dorset described the accident, and related the steps taken to convey the deceased to the hotel. Dr. Grace said that when he was called to attend the deceased he found him lying unconscious on the road, attended by several friends. No bones were broken, and witness judged the nature of the injury to be concussion of the brain. Witness directed that the patient should be conveyed to the Princess Hotel, where he attended him for about 20 minutes, and then left him for a time. Returning later in the evening he found deceased still insensible, and suffering from compression of the brain caused by the rupture of a blood-vessel within the skull. Witness left him about 11.15, seeing that there was then no chance of saving his life. Had known deceased for many years as a man of sober and temperate habits. Henry Curtis, carrier, deposed that accused passed him at a sharp canter in Tinakori-road, at twilight last night. Immediately afterwards he saw the boy run in front of deceased's horse, which turned a complete somersault. Deceased seemed to have full control of his horse when he passed witness. Did not think that deceased and the boy were likely to have seen each other until it was too late to avert the accident. The jury returned a verdict of Accidental Death."2Civil Registration Index - New Zealand (https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/Home/), Death 1887 / 2430.
