"DEATH OF A PRISONER.
ACCIDENT AT WAIKERIA.
PNEUMONIA SUPERVENES
[BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HAMILTON. Friday.
An inmate of the Waikeria Borstal Institute, John Lawrence Cosgrove, aged 21, died in the Waikato Hospital last evening. An inquest was held before Mr. W. F. Mason, J.P. and a jury of four to-day. Medical evidence was given that deceased was admitted to the Waikato Hospital on Wednesday. Ho had a history of having had his foot pierced by a pitchfork five days before. He became feverish and his symptoms indicated that he was suffering from tetanus On admission to the hospital no trace of tetanus could be found. The wound was healthy and practically healed. His chest showed definite signs of bronchial pneumonia on the right side and he was treated for pneumonia. His condition became worse yesterday morning, but it was not alarming. In the afternoon the patient complained of soreness in the throat and his condition was much worse. An examination showed that there was diphtheria infection, which did not look like the primary cause of his condition. He collapsed and died from heart failure. Alexander St. Patrick Jordan, chief warder at the Waikeria Borstal Institute, said that deceased's conduct while in the institute had been excellent. His health had been very good. While forking ensilage on the Waikeria farm he drove the point of a pitchfork through his left foot. Cosgrove said his foot did not feel sore and he asked to be allowed to continue his work. The accident was reported to witness, who bathed the foot with disinfectants. Cosgrove was not allowed to work and after being medically examined he was treated for influenza. His temperature rose and he was sent to the Waikato Hospital for observation. The jury returned a verdict that deceased died of heart failure following an accident on which tetanus symptoms, pneumonia and diphtheria supervened. The jury expressed the view that every care was taken for tho welfare of deceased by the prison authorities."
