"Noeline Catherine Cosgrave
Thank you all for being here this afternoon to help us celebrate and give thanks for Noeline’s long life. Marlene & Jim, Gary and Diane, Paul & Tonisha are with us in spirit today.
Noeline was born in Wellington on December 31st 1920. Her parents were Justine Brady and Vivian Cosgrave. Vivian became a Catholic when he married Justine and their shared faith was to be a key component of their family life. Noeline was the only girl in the family. She had two older brothers (Jim and George) and two younger brothers (Viv and Harry).
Noeline’s father was a police officer and the family moved around the lower North Island during her childhood and early adult years. They lived in Wellington, Levin, Hunterville, Taumaranui, Wanganui and Foxton.
One of Noeline’s childhood memories was of her cousin Kevin O’Donoghue coming to stay with her family in Hunterville in 1931 after the Napier earthquake. Kevin had just begun going to school in Napier when the earthquake took place. His big cousin Noeline was ‘charged’ with helping him settle into school in Hunterville. Kevin later became a Marist priest and has been a faithful visitor and friend to Noeline over many years.
Noeline was a bright student and loved learning. She was the dux of her school and would have loved to go on to university. However, the boys education took priority and when Noeline left school she went to Gilby’s Business College to do secretarial training. She worked in Wellington for all her working life. She was a very successful public servant and was secretary to several “Commissioners of Works” while working for the Ministry of Works. When she retired from there, she was the office manager for a firm of Wellington architects for about twelve years.
Noeline always loved clothes and shoes and dressed with great style. Her ‘nearest and dearest’ can testify that she also had an unerring eye for the fashion triumphs or mistakes of others.
After her mother died suddenly in 1950, Noeline began to spend most of her weekends in Foxton helping her Dad with housekeeping and generally keeping an eye on him. It was over that time that she became an excellent cook. In the succeeding years, her friends and family looked forward to her fabulous baking and yummy roast dinners and were amazed when she told us that she could hardly boil water before her mother died.
Justine had been an amazing cook. She was also very quick witted and her daughters in law recalled that she always had a good joke or story to tell - another of Noeline’s talents. We suspect that was where her forthrightness also came from.
All four of Noeline’s brothers served in the Air Force, with George flying in the RAF bombing missions over Germany in World War 2. We are not too sure which of them introduced the phrase “you can’t fly on one wing” when debating whether or not to have a second g&t but that phrase is alive and well in family gatherings today.
In the late 1950’s Noeline purchased her own home in Kemp Street, Kilbirnie and her Dad lived with her there until his death in 1969. Noeline moved to an apartment in Hataitai in 1992 and lived there until 2012. In those years she spent in Kilbirnie and Hataitai St Patricks in Childers Terrace was always HER church.
Each year Noeline and her father spent a week whitebaiting at a ‘secret’ location near Levin and had many happy summer holidays touring the North Island and visiting family. By then Noeline had taken over the role of driver but Pop remained a very vigilant and vociferous ‘right hand man’. Need I say more!
After her father died, Noeline was able to travel further afield with her great friend, Stella, and had many happy holidays in various parts of Australia as well as Fiji and Norfolk Island. She also enjoyed regular trips to Australia to see Viv and his family and had a great week in Melbourne with Mum, Tricia and me to celebrate Mum’s 80th birthday. It was a trip that we were always going to repeat but never quite got round to.
Noeline never married. She had 10 nieces and nephews; 16 great nieces and nephews; and has 14 great, great nieces and nephews to date. They live and work in many different places around the world. She loved being an aunt and always had a special place in heart for the boys.
When Noeline was no longer able to live independently, she became a resident at Kilmarnock Home in Berhampore . She moved to Cashmere Heights in Johnsonville in August 2013.
It has been interesting to see ‘boy power’ carry over into her later life with the carers at Cashmere Heights. Daniel and Ryan were her favourites and she was always more alert and responsive when they were around. Tricia and I also saw that ‘boy power’ was still alive and well in recent weeks when visiting Noeline. She was confined to bed, very poorly and it was an effort for her to just open her eyes. My son called in to see her unexpectedly and when she heard his voice she opened her eyes said “Adam how lovely to see you”! She then responded to a joke he made before closing her eyes again.
Bless you Noeline for being part of our lives. We will miss you."
Eulogy given by Margaret Ridley-Gibbons (nee Cosgrave).

"RAILWAY GANGER KILLED.
JIGGER STRUCK BY EXPRESS
ATTEMPT TO LEAP CLEAR.
(ßy Telegraph.—Press Association.)
PALMERSTON N., this day.
The Wellington to Auckland express, after leaving Shannon, en route to Palmerston North, at 4.30 yesterday afternoon ran into a ganger, Mr. W. Sherlock, of Tokomaru, about 400yds south of the Kingston Road crossing. Sherlock was going home on the jigger, and apparently failed to hear the whistle of the express until it was within a few yards of him. A high westerly wind was blowing. He attempted to throw himself clear, but the engine struck him and threw him down an embankment. The express pulled up quickly. Sherlock was sent to the hospital at Palmerston North suffering from concussion and internal injuries, from which he died in the evening."6Newspaper - Manawatu Evening Standard, Page 8; Column 7, 8 Sep 1928.
A gale was blowing at the time of the accident and, in addition to making it difficult for the approaching train to be heard by the ganger, the wind is stated to have blown the smoke down the line and made a screen that obstructed the driver's view. The express, which was travelling at a good speed, pulled up quickly and backed to the scene of the accident, the injured man being placed on board and taken to Palmerston North Hospital. Dr. William, a Gisborne surgeon on the train, rendered immediate medical attention, and the ambulance was waiting with a doctor when the train reached the local station. Mr. Sherlock was conscious and his injuries did not appear so serious as they were subsequently found to be. He was operated on at 8:30, but never rallied, and died at a quarter past eleven last night from severe internal injuries. The deceased gentleman, who was 49 years of age, is survived by a widow and four young children."
