"DEATH OF AN OLD HIGH WYCOMBE TRADESMAN

Mr. Alfred Barton A Famous Local Butcher

Many residents of High Wycombe, particularly those who have been intimately associated with him for most of his 78 years, will regret to hear of the death of Mr. Alfred Barton, of Priory Avenue, High Wycombe, which took place early yesterday morning at the War Memorial Hospital, to which institution he was admitted on Monday. Of late Mr. Barton's health had not been good, but as long as able he walked from Piory Avenue most days into the town to talk with old friends and transact business.

Mr. Barton, prior to his retirement from business, ranked as one of the oldest tradesmen of the town. He was a son of the late Charles Barton, butcher, of Easton Street, High Wycombe, who also carried on business in Oxford Street. Mr. Alfred had, with his wife, in turn presided over both establishments, and it was from Oxford street that he finally retired to Priory Avenue.

A Fund of Humour

He was of a genial disposition, and possessed a fund of humour that often revealed the true character of those who were so often recited in "The Bull Lane Show".

It was in the vicinity of Bull Lane that Mr. Barton spent many of his earlier years. He had a lifelong interest in the affairs of High Wycombe, and although not one who sought public honours, he was a keen observer of things that mattered. He was associated with the Parish Church, at which he attended to within a short time of his death.

To Mrs. Barton, who has been in distress for a long time, and their adopted daughter, sincere sympathy will be extended.

The funeral will take place on Monday."

4Newspaper - Banff Advertiser, Page 8; column 3, 24 Dec 1896.
"THE LATE MR. PATERSON
WANFORD, BANFF
Many will regret of the death on Wednesday last week, after a short illness, of Mr. Wm. Paterson, which occurred at his residence at Wanford, Banff. The deceased gentleman, who had reached the sixty-third year of his age, was son of the late Captain James paterson, shipowner and coal merchant in Banff, and in his early youth served in the office of the late Mr. Patrick Rose, solicitor, Banff. Mr. Paterson, however, evinced a strong liking for a seafaring life, and, leaving the employment of Mr. Rose, he became an apprentice with Messers Marshall, Eldridge & Co., shipowners, London, serving his apprenticeship on board the Constance, belonging to that firm, which was employed in the passenger trade between London and Melbourne. At the close of his apprenticeship Mr. Paterson returned to his native place, and had command in turn of several vessels belonging to the locality, the last vessel to be commanded by him being the Glenmore of Banff, which was engaged in the Brazilian and Mediterranean trades. On giving up the sea, the deceased gentleman, at the request of his uncle, Mr. Wm. Bartlet, manager of the Banff Brewery, joined him in the management of hat establishment, and on Mr. Bartlet's death, the brewery was sold, and soon after, in 1972, Mr. Paterson acquired a lease of the fine farm of Wanford, at which he permanently resided til the date of his death. On the death of his father in 1867, Mr. Paterson acquired his share of the Banff Sawmill Company, then carried on by the firm of Messers James paterson & Co., and in this undertaking the deceased gentleman took an active interest until about three years ago. In 1888 Mr. Paterson was appointed a Justice of the Peace for the county, and he was also a Commissioner of Supply. In anything connected with shipping matters the deceased gentleman took a deep interest, and for many years he was chairman of the Banffshire Mutual Marine and Banff Mutual Freight Insurance Associations, continuing to hold these offices until those bodies ceased to exist a couple of years ago. Much respected throughout the parish of Alvah, of the church of which he was an elder, the deaceased had a wide circle of friends. Mr. Paterson was unmarried. The funeral took place on Saturday from Wanford to the New Cemetery in Banff, and was very largely attended by gentlemen from a wide district. The blinds in the principal places of business passed by the cortege were drawn, and the flags of the shipping in Banff and Macduff harbours were hoisted half-mast high. The chief mourners were - Messers Sim, town clerk, Cullen; Smith, Union Bank, Glasgow (both brothers in law of deceased); Frederick William Sim, Cullen; William Beedie (nephews of deceased); William Ross, Hilton (married to a niece of deceased); John W. Simpson, Banff. In the parish church of Alvah on Sunday, in the course of an impressive sermon from Luke xii 35-36, the Rev. Hugh Fraser made feeling reference to the death of Mr. Paterson."
